We are City Champions in a 6th sport this academic year but this one was arguably the most impressive. Our school has not won the Town/City Championship since 1957 – 62 long years ago. On Friday 12th April, this wait was ended by a fantastic 3-1 victory over a spirited Stow Heath side – the same team that inflicted our only defeat of the season.
The game, at the Wolves Training Ground, started well for us, keeping the ball and passing it around on the lovely 3G surface. We are definitely more ‘at home’ on better quality pitches. Our first goal came from some excellent work from Harley down the left, who crossed it for Abraham to find the corner of the net. We were 2-0 up quickly afterwards, when again Harley beat his marker to finish low into the far corner. Our opponents did not give up however and they used the long ball to good effect. We dealt with the threat well until a missed clearance allowed the Stow Heath midfield player to shoot right from the edge of the large box. Unfortunately for Kyle, he could only watch it sail into the top corner. Game on!
A half time team talk rallied our boys to give it everything in the second half. We gained the initiative and got a third goal when Harley, unplayable all game, hit a fierce shot that the ‘keeper could only parry to Deneal to make it 3-1. We controlled the rest of the game well, with Kyle having very little to do in the way of stopping shots.
I am proud of how the boys played and followed the game plan. To win the City Championship when not winning our league and to beat three league winners in the knockout stages was inspired. Well done boys!
